Schnauzers need their toenails trimmed every two (2) to three (3) weeks.
If you can hear the nails clicking on a tile floor when the dog is walking (not running) it is time for a trim.

How to trim your dog's toenails.
Step 1: Gather your materials. To make the process easier, I like to pour some styptic powder into the lid.
Step 2: Place your dog in a position to make trimming easy on you and them. The grooming table works very well, but you can also do it with your dog in your lap. If you are nervous, have a friend hold the dog.
Step 3: Using the pliers style nail trimmer, cut the nail along the blue dotted line in the diagram above. The goal is to expose the quick without cutting the quick. When the quick is exposed, it will look like a little black button in the center of the nail. If you cut the quick, relax, this is why we have styptic powder.
Step 4: Repeat for each toenail.
Quick Tips
🐾 Front toenails grow twice as fast as back toenails. Only cut half as much off the back toes.
🐾 The guillotine style trimmers will cause you to cut into the quick every time.
🐾 Styptic powder can sting when first applied. Hold your dog's foot tightly.
🩸How to Apply Stypic Powder🩸
😷 So, you cut quick... Don't worry, we have all done this.
😷 Your dog probably yelped and yanked his foot out of your hand. Relax, your dog is not as injured as he is pretending to be. Schnauzers (especially the boys) love to be over-dramatic when it comes to nail trimming.
😷 There is probably a scary amount of blood. Again, relax, your dog is not as injured as he is pretending to be.
Step 1: Take a breath. Use a paper towel to dab away the extra blood.
Step 2: Moisten your finger on the wet paper towel.
Step 3: Dip your moistened finger into the styptic powder.
Step 4: Tap the styptic powder onto the bleeding nail.
You may need to repeat steps 2-4 a few times. Do NOT lick your finger to get it wet. Styptic powder tastes very bad. Don't ask how I know this.
